LO4: Understand developing technologies in the television and film industries

Task 4: Understand developing technologies in the television and film industries.

In this assignment, I will research about some of the developing technologies within the media industry, which will involve: satellite, cable, digital, film-based, interactive, high definition, internet and pay per view.

One of the developments within the TV and Film industry is Satellite television. Satellite Television is a television programme where all the communications are being received by a satellite, which is outdoor. The satellite dishes are on the back of people’s houses or they can be in the front of the house. Satellite television will have a variety of services and channels. The satellite television will sometimes lose signal in the bad weather. The Direct-broadcast satellite television will come to the public in two different satellites and they are: analogue and digital. The public will either have the analogue satellite receiver or the digital satellite receiver. The analogue satellite television will be replaced by digital satellite television. Later on, it will then be available in a better quality, so the public will be able to watch television clearly.

The second development within the TV and Film industry is Cable Television. This is a system which provides TV for the customers that use signals that are conducted through cables. Some of the television sets are cable-ready and they have a cable television tuner capable of receiving the cable TV. If people would want to get premium television, then the television will require a set top box which is called cable converter. The negative effect of cable television is that the signal can go up to 30 or 40 amplifiers before is reaches an person's home. The cable could get damaged, if the water touches the cable from underground.

The third development within the TV and Film industry is Digital. The digital TV recorder is the same as the video recorders, which will allow you to record a television programme which you want to watch later. It also has an online TV guide. It will also allow you to rewind, fast-forward and pause the programmes you like. This will mean that the audience can watch their favourite TV programme whenever they like and they don’t have to be glued to the television in order not to miss the programmes. This will benefit the producers because there will be more audiences viewing their programme. For example, on the Sky HD Bo and Virgin TV, you can record up to 60 gigabytes of programmes.

The forth development within TV and Film industry is Film-Based. There are a lot of films that use computer-generated imagery, for example 3D Animation and Motion Capture Animation. 3D Animation is when you put 2D and 3D animation together to create special effects and they are used in animated and non-animated films. They use this so that the film has a high quality. This will allow the user to produce images that they wouldn’t be to create in real life, but they will have to make it look realistic so it looks good in the film. Here are some examples of movies that used computer-generated imagery: Pirate of the Caribbean, Toy Story and Shrek.

The fifth development within the TV and Film industry is Interactive Television. This will describe a number of techniques which will allow the viewers to interact with the television. If the audiences votes create decisions that will reflect on the show continues, then that means interactive television.

The sixth development within the TV and Film industry is High Definition Television. This is different from other types of television because the resolution is higher than others. So this means that the quality on the television will also be higher. There are some people that can’t tell the difference between normal TV Nd the HD TV but some can because the quality of the images on the HD is better than the normal TV.

The seventh development within the TV and Film industry is Internet Television. The television will distribute media through the internet so all the viewers can watch it. The internet has been developed really well with the TV and Film industry, it will allow the viewers to views Films and Television programmes on their computers and then this will mean that there will be a lot of people from around the world who would watch it. The internet will allow the television audience to watch any shows they have missed online. If there was no internet, then this will mean that they might not be able to  view a programme they have missed. There are some people that download films. This means that the audience do not have to spend money to watch the film at the cinema.

The eighth development within the TV and Film industry is Pay Per View. The customers will pay just for that one tome they would like to view the programme and if they would want to continue viewing the programme, then they will need continue paying. The events will be shown at the same time as everyone that orders this. The will include, movies entertainment and sport events. For example, Sky has a Sky Box Office as their pay per view options, so this will give the customers an choice whether they would like to pay to watch it or not.

In conclusion, the TV and Film industry has developed so much with the new technologies in the media industry. I have learnt the different types of technologies and developments which have affected the media industry.
